Why should you consider the Volvo V90 for your next car?

Have you ever been to Sweden? If not, step inside the new Volvo V90, and you'll practically be there, right down to the Swedish flag adorning the seats. You won't find any elks in here, or snow, but this is a quintessentially Swedish car, and it's going to be perfect for Australian driving.

It also looks fantastic, so you'll be ecstatic every time you see it sitting in your driveway or garage. It's a stately wagon that draws design cues from classic Volvos of old, and the market leaders in the station wagon game. See for yourself – this is an impressive car.

What's under the hood of the Volvo V90?

There are two primary engine variants to choose from in the Volvo V90:

  • A twin-turbo diesel option that produces 173 kilowatts of power and 480 Nm of torque.
  • A supercharged/turbocharged combination that throws down 235 kilowatts of power and 400 Nm of torque.

As you'd expect with a diesel engine, it's not as fast off the line, but it's better at towing and has great fuel efficiency. The petrol-powered model, however, is very quick for a large car, shooting from 0 to 100 kph in just 6.1 seconds.

What do you really get with this car?

As a station wagon, you might think that it's just another model on the market that makes it more difficult to choose the right one – because "they're all the same", right? Not really.

In the Volvo V90, adding to the speed off the line and the luxury interior you'd expect on any Volvo, there's more than enough leg room in the second row of seats for three tall adults. There's also a whopping 560 litres of boot space with the second row up, and 1,526 litres with the seats down. You'd fit almost anything you need to in this car, and the performance won't be affected.

Most station wagons aren't great at going around corners, but a modern suspension system, different in the front and rear, makes sure road contact is good, even when pointing the nose around a tight bend at speed. You'll find the Volvo V90 to be a very capable road tripper.

The Volvo V90 might be the best station wagon on the market – and you can be one of the first in Australia to own one when they come to our shores next year.
