Crossover SUVs are fast becoming some of the most popular cars on our roads, and it's because of the versatility they offer. They're compact enough to drive around town, but they have plenty of interior space, great performance, and they're extremely comfortable. In the case of the all-new Volvo XC60, it's one of the smartest cars ever built, and has an interior straight from the future.

It's incredibly safe, with a world-first collision avoidance system that will help to keep all road users safe. Plus, it's fuel-efficient and has a twin-engine hybrid variant for anyone concerned about their carbon footprint. This car satisfies an unbelievably long list of requirements.

What's so smart about the new Volvo XC60?

One of the major talking points surrounding the all-new Volvo XC60 is the Evasive Manoeuvre Assist function. This is a front-collision avoidance system active between 50 kph and 100 kph – essentially all the time you're on the road. It works by constantly monitoring what is ahead of you, be it another car, a pedestrian, a cyclist, or an animal you might not be able to see.

If that object changes path suddenly or stops without warning, the system will respond immediately. You may not be able to react fast enough, but you will make some movements (like turning the steering wheel or applying the brakes). The Evasive Manoeuvre Assist function then applies more braking force overall, turns the steering wheel to avoid a collision, and can even apply brakeforce to different wheels to help move you avoid the danger.

Self-driving cars aren't here yet, but technology like this shows how close we are to fully autonomous, safe roads.

What's the interior like?

For a car that has advanced safety technology, you'd expect it to be clever in other ways too. In the cabin, there are a total of only eight buttons. Eight! Almost all of the functions can be accessed through the 9-inch high-resolution touchscreen in the centre console, and the bold graphics on-screen make it easy to read without taking your eyes off the road for long periods of time.

What's more, the fuel-efficiency of the T8 variant (the twin-engined hybrid) is phenomenal, achieving consumption of just 2.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. There really is a lot to love about the Volvo XC60.
