Almost one in five Australian drivers do not know how to change a tyre, according to a new survey.
An independent consumer study conducted by Canstar Blue found that 18 per cent of respondents lack the skills and knowledge to change a tyre - with one in three of these being women.
The survey also found that eight per cent of Australian motorists had experienced having their car defected due to balding tyres.
Canstar Blue manager Rebecca Logan stated that ideally motorists should check their tyres once a month and before long trips, taking note of the tread-wear indicator bars on most modern tyres.
"Motorists should make it a priority to ensure their tyres have ample tread which helps disperse water and grip the road," she said (January 19).
"Bald tyres can lead to tyre failure, punctures and can impact on your ability to steer and brake effectively. It can even cause issues with fuel mileage."
Younger drivers were the group of drivers most likely to neglect their car tyres with one in five having experienced defected cars due to unsafe tyres.
Gold Coast drivers unsure about the condition of their tyres may wish to visit a car service specialist for an inspection.
